The Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Information Networking Institute (INI) building in Pittsburgh lacked a suitable space for various distance learning functions. To accommodate its various activities, approximately 4,000 SF of existing building was fully gutted and converted into a 50 student distance learning room, a 20 person conference room, and a 36 student computer lab. read more

The distance learning room was designed specifically with video-conferencing in mind. The room was acoustically treated – both wall surfaces and wall construction. Fixed university-style lecture hall seating was wired with local push-to-talk microphones at all student seats. High-end video display, capture and recording was incorporated into the room to allow for bi-lateral communication of audio/video signals. Video production lighting was used to ensure optimum color rendering on the video signals. Lighting is controlled by the video control system and uses the DALI communication code for dimming. The entire space was designed with a corporate style.

Phase 2 of the project included a similar renovation at the CMU building at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Palo Alto, CA. An existing space was fully renovated to include a 40 student distance learning room with similar features to the distance learning room in Pittsburgh.
