Amphitheater Site Design & Utility Infrastructure

Montage Mountain, Moosic, PA

This 20,000-seat Performing Arts Center involved developing a site that delicately wove the facility around an existing 6-acre wetland area. Preserving the natural setting of the site and integrating the facility into the natural terrain was the basis for the entire design concept. Granite cliffs, a mountain stream and a dense protected forest are as much a part of the facility as the main amphitheater area. The Center’s rest room facilities, concession and food areas, box office and main lobby area all incorporated into the natural landscape along with the 6,600 SF tensile roof covered reserved seating and stage. The facility has been described by Billboard Magazine as what will be “perhaps the most scenic outdoor music center on the East Coast”.
While the design incorporated the natural aspect of the site, the facility was also designed to handle the large volume of people that attend the concert series each summer. More than 350,000 per year attend the Center, and the client’s primary concern was the ability of all the built structures and services to “hold up” under the often-harsh use of the venue.
