Demolition of Deteriorated Structures

Norristown State Hospital, Norristown, PA

Quad3 designed the demolition process for three structures. Constructed in 1876, all structures are located above ground but interconnected through a vast tunnel system. These tunnels support both essential utilities that cannot be re-routed or temporarily turned off, and are the primary routes of travel for the staff of the facility.

Design included abatement for all asbestos containing materials, lead and other hazardous materials such as mercury vapor lamps, PCB, lead acid batteries and volatile liquids. In addition, air monitoring was performed throughout the demolition process as part of the contractors workers’ health and safety plan.
