Callahan’s Café & Coffee House

Callahan’s Café and Coffee House is a 2,200 SF, bistro restaurant serving the culinary creations of Chef Michael Callahan. The big-city industrial atmosphere has become a local’s favorite. The sophisticated mixed material design palate reflects deep earth tones layered with galvanized, stainless steel and oil rubbed metal finishes. The project’s inspirations are rooted in the texture of ground coffee, the industrial age of development and an obscure Blues tune by Billy Holiday.

The space was previously occupied by a coffee and sandwich shop and did not have the chef requested restaurant grade kitchen. The design team proposed a linear layout that strategically placed the kitchen in the back left side of the space. This orientation allowed for maximum seating and utilized the kitchen’s position for future expansion. The design showcases exposed metal duct work and electrical conduit. The centralized decorative metal orb light fixtures played a crucial component in enlarging the space against the contrasting dark blue ceiling. The furniture and cabinetry compliment the industrial feel, whereas the stainless steel wall track system allows for artisan’s installations while creating a synergy with the neighboring art gallery. The project is a demonstration of form, function and adaptive design.
