The vision was to transform a vacant building into “The Open Space”- a flexible, multi-functional space that could accommodate a wide range of programming. The anchor user was the first North American Retail Outlet for Boden Clothing a mail-order clothier founded in the United Kingdom by designer Johnnie Boden.

Flexible “Open Space” – Boden Clothing

The project presented a unique challenge in that Boden’s initial use of the space as a retail outlet was limited to weekends, while a variety of other users needed to be accommodated at different times.  The site needed to easily transform from retail store to art gallery to a venue for cooking classes, indoor farmers’ and craft markets, banquets and events.  The Authority challenged Quad3 to develop a space that provided flexibility for the dramatic variety of users, with aesthetics that would complement many different types of functions.

Quad3 exceeded the Authority’s expectations in creating a design concept for the flexible space project and assisting in defining the vision.  In addition to addressing ADA and life safety issues and complete mechanical and electrical upgrades, Quad3 pursued the transitional layout from a number of different angles. We introduced refined finishes and adaptable lighting, hardwood floors, and feature walls with flexible wall displays that can house retail and artwork. The high ceilings with spiral ductwork and frosted pendants enhance the Open Space’s concept and atmosphere, creating a welcoming new space for Downtown Pittston that comfortably shelters many different types of users. This location is Boden’s first retail outlet in the United States.
